There are many ways to get traffic to a new website. Gaining visitors is one of the most common challenges we experience for new website. Here are a few of the better ways of getting visitors to your site, for free.

1. Focus on ‘Long Tail’ Keywords

Long tail keywords are phrases that are much more specific to your company. For example, if you provide couples and marriage therapy in Seattle, trying to target ‘therapist Seattle’ within your site content will most likely have high competition levels from other therapists. Ranking highly for this term/keyword will be tough to do, and could be very costly as well!

Instead, aim for long tail keywords which could be a much more specific service or product range, e.g ‘divorced couples therapy Seattle’. This more specific search term is more likely to reach those who specifically need this service . These are what are called ‘long tail keywords.’ They tend to have lower competition and make it easier for your business to rank higher for the term than others.

2. Create Content Consistently

Number one rule to most things in life is consistency. Committing to your online business marketing means you need to create content (often in the form of a blog), this is vital. Don’t post all your posts at once, drip/post them over time. Google rewards new and fresh content which also gives useful information. Plus, regularly posting new posts positions you as a credible resource and enhances the authority of your website. Keep at it, keep chipping away, and you’ll see results.

3. Quantity vs. Quality Content

Many bloggers believe publishing 2500+ word articles every day is a huge achievement. And, if that’s your goal, then it is a big achievement, but you need to consider who you are writing to and why you are creating content.

For most websites/blogs/businesses, you want to be writing for your customer/readers (existing or potential) to create a greater awareness about your expertise, products, or services. So if your 10,000 word post doesn’t write to them and fill these needs, then it’s been a total waste of time.

The new way is to be sure and gain external links from real sites that have a closer relation to your own site. If the other site a equal or higher Page Rank to your own business, that’s even better! On way you can improve your links is to ask those who do link to your site to use keywords that your site is targeting. this will associate those terms with your site/business and improve your link SEO.

You can also help effective link building without the help of any other sites. To do this, just building internal links within your own website. This shows Google that your writing is relevant and encourages visitors to dig deeper into your site.

5. Follow Search Engine Webmaster Guidelines

People think that they are more clever than Google. They’re not. Though tricky tactics can gain some traction for a site, these results are always short term. Google almost always punishes you and your site and you’ll end up and in a much worse position than you were to begin with. Be sure to dedicate time and planning on a well thought out SEO Strategy while paying close attention to the Google Webmaster Guidelines. When followed, with a great strategy, your site/blog/business will see the long term rewards.

6. Optimize for Visitors, Not Search Engines

SEO needs to be a priority when you create, edit, or update any of your content. This starts by writing meta tags for each page of your site which gives search engines a clear description of the content on each page. The most important meta tags are meta titles and meta descriptions.

Meta Title:  A short description for the page which tells the search engine about the page content. Meta title should contain keywords close to the beginning of the descriptions.

Meta Description: A longer description of the page, typically less than 156, used to give more information while also to get search engine users to click through to your site.

7. Reduce Your Bounce Rate

Another one of the many ways to get traffic to a new website is to improve your site’s usability. Usability is at the core of Google’s SEO practices. One of the key factors to the algorithms Google use is how long users stay on a site vs. them leaving your site – known as ‘bounce rate’. A high bounce rate indicates that the page didn’t contain content that was relevant to the user, or that the page offered a poor user experience. Even if the user finds exactly what they want, your site should entice them to stay and read other articles, therefore decreasing your bounce rate. Keep an eye on your website’s bounce rate and try to do all you can to keep the visitor engaged.

8. Use Google’s Keyword Planner

Google’s Keyword Planner is a great starting point to find out which keywords you should try to rank for. Google’s Keyword Planner was originally only for their AdWords users, but you can still use it without paying to advertise.

Simply type in some key phrases that you think visitors will use to try to find you. Google’s Keyword Planner will give you a list of the number of monthly searches for these terms, as well as how competitive each term is. This can help you find the most useful keywords to target which align with your site/business/blog. There’s a lot that goes into keyword research and it is a rich topic my itself. Spend some time understanding Keyword Research because it’s well worth your time.

9. Engage with Your Online Community

Providing useful content to your online following gives you authority within your niche. Invite your online audience to ask questions and give feedback about the products/services you deliver. This is huge in providing feedback on what potential customers think and may want, it also gives your site authority within Google rankings because you’re providing useful content.

Also, when you visit other community websites, be sure to link back to your own site through comments, posts, and questions. This allows people to check out your site and generate more traffic. Warning though, don’t spam the sites with your links, that will definitely turn away potential visitors off.


10. Use social media

Now you have a lot of your site optimized and followed Google’s guidelines, but what about social media? If you think social media is a fad and your site does not need it, you’re wrong. In a study conducted by Searchmetrics, seven social media activities ranked in the top eight factors that contributed towards SEO – particularly Google Plus. Post your blog links on social media to get your social media followers back to your site’s relevant, keyworded posts. This will get your site, name, brand, and business in front of more eyes and get them to click back to your site. Boom, more traffic.
